[attr="class","likedoinfo"]Ancients are archaic beings powerful enough to create supernatural, or in modern terms, Otherworld, species. They were idolized by ancient humans as Gods and are the most powerful species within the Otherworld. In modern times, the Ancients have been reduced to nothing more than myths after almost all of the families were killed or weakened to the point they were forced to take vessels.
Because they are naturally incorporeal beings of pure energy, on the mortal plane they must inhabit a vessel. While in a vessel, they are considered weak compared to their true forms. They retain their abilities but they are on a weaker level, though they appear a lot stronger compared to other species. When they inhabit the vessel it is unknown whether the original soul is destroyed or simply silenced, though with some they can sometimes become one if a bond is made.
Ancients live off the energy of humans or the species they create in a variety of ways, the type of energy depending on their individual preference: blood, emotions, sexual energy, life essence. Technically, while in their vessels they can live off human food, it only sustains their physical form but not their powers. In order to gain strength, they must feed on pure energy.
Many Ancients have assumed several identities throughout their lifetimes; for example, deities that share similar stories and powers such as Zeus from Greek Mythology and Odin from Norse Mythology are often the same Ancient idolized by different cultures.
Unlike other species, Ancients have no issue copulating with humans or other supernatural species; resulting in stories of demi-gods. It is unclear how the species is determined with any offspring produced, though in most cases they will inherit their parent's abilities depending on the union.
All Ancients have a unique collection of abilities that makes them into the "diety" each religion views them as. Though Ancients from the same family have similar abilities, each has their own unique power that sets them apart from others. All Ancients, however, share common abilities such as teleportation, shapeshifting, and Omni-linguism, and the ability to create and sense magical artifacts.
Some Ancients have been known to be strong enough to grant mortals "divine-like gifts"; which can result in the creation of an Otherworld species. For example, the Ancient Posiedon created the Merpeople, water spirits manifested in solid form, or an Ancient known as Kaia created a blood-sucking species later known as Vampires. (Not all Ancients are as well-known as others. Members are allowed to create their own Ancients but must discuss ideas with an admin for approval to prevent copy-cat characters.)
Ancients are immortal and technically cannot die. They can, however, be bound, trapped, or weakened to the point they must inhabit a new vessel until they regain enough strength. This can take between decades to centuries, depending on the damage taken. The only thing that can truly kill an Ancient is another Ancients weapon or powers.
