[attr="class","likedoinfo"]A Mystic is a human able to possess the ability to wield magic. They are able to sense magical energy, see astral realms, and have developed ways to manipulate energy to produce desired results. Have been given a bad reputation by humans, most modern Mystics are either unaware of their heritage or practice their craft in secret. Magic can be practiced in many different forms according to the individual's preference, religion, or place of origin; all with the potential to be used for good or evil. Because of this, there is more than one type of Mystic, including Witches, Magi, Warlocks, and Sorcerers. Some Mystics can harness several different abilities whereas others may be gifted with one of rarity and uniqueness.
Mystics are a highly secretive species. Mystics tend to be protective of their heritage and rarely outsiders are trusted. This is mostly due to the centuries of persecution of Witches during the Inquisition and American Witch Trails. During the Medieval era in Europe, Mystics took refuge underground in order to survive, meeting only in secret and creating strict laws to ensure non-discovery. It was dangerous for large groups to meet and restrictions on the sizes of magical families, which at the time tended to be considerably large, were set in place. Since Mystics, with the exception of Warlocks, inherit their abilities from their parent, it is the parent's responsibility to teach their children how to control their magic.
During a time when Mystics could openly practice their craft, it was rare to find a Witch or Magi that didn't belong to a coven and magic wasn't regulated and controlled as it is today. In more recent times, magical families are few to none and most mystic coven's consist of unrelated people who share a common goal or magical type. It is much more likely today for a Witch or Magi to be solitary than belong to a large family due to years of discrimination from humans, forcing some mystics to completely cut themselves off from their magic and produce offspring without passing on practical knowledge of the magic they inherited, leaving many generations to teach themselves or unaware altogether. Towards the end of the 17th century, the Grand Coven began assigning Familiars to help guide Witches and Magi that did not belong to a coven. It is viewed as dangerous for a Mystic to go unprotected and uneducated. For the safety of the Mystic in training and Mystics in general from disapproving humans, a law was instated that Witches or Magi who don't have a Mystic parent or guardian to teach them cannot practice magic without having a Familiar. This was later changed to incorporate all Mystics including ones from large families.
The Grand Coven, which was formed around the 11th century, originally was established as an international form of government for policing witchcraft.
HEREDITARY WITCHES AND MAGI
Among Mystics, females are considered Witches and males are considered Magi. Hereditary Witches and Magi account for the majority of the Mystic population and inherit their abilities, passing from mother to daughter, or in the case of a Magi, father to son. Mystics are primarily known for their natural ability to imbue objects with magic, giving them characteristics beyond their normal use. From simply creating pools of magic to creating weapons capable of cutting through unbreakable stone. Another form of this is the creation of glyphs, runes, and tattoos used primarily for two purposes; the first to bind a protective spell onto the user, the second to facilitate the manipulation of energy. These objects once created do not need any more input to have active.
WARLOCKS
Warlocks are the only type of Mystic that doesn't require the user to be born into it. Witches and Magi are primarily good in nature and many see themselves as the protectors of nature and natural forces. If a Witch or Magi were to go against their craft and make a deal with a Demon they will become a Warlock. Humans can even inherit powers from making a deal with a demon and will become a Warlock. It is also a hereditary trait passed from parent to child and all children born from a Demon-Warlock/Human union will be born a Warlock. Even if the child isn't born evil, their powers will reflect their parents. For children born to two Warlock parents, there is an opportunity before their powers completely manifest to renounce their Warlock powers and become human.
SORCERERS
Sorcerers are Human/Mystic-Fae hybrids that are born with magical capabilities. Sorcerers, or in the case of a female, Sorceresses, aren't inherently good or evil. Their main difference is their magic is oriented with the type of Fae their parent is. They can also be born from a human parent and will be guaranteed to inherit magical abilities. Most Sorcerers/Sorceresses aren't immortal but the aging process stops between the ages of 15-30 with the use of magic. Unlike Witches and Magi who draw power from the energy surrounding them, a Sorcerers magic is strictly driven from their core. Their magic is produced directly from within themselves and therefore they do not require a source in most cases.
A Mystics eyes glow when using magic, the color correlating with the type of magic they use and if old enough or practice Spirit or Ancestral Magic, their eyes can turn milky white and last as long as the spell is active. For Warlocks their eyes will always turn opalescent.
A Mystics powers are not chosen at random and either reflect their ancestral link, their preference of magical type, or serve a purpose in one form or another for that particular mystic. Both active and inactive powers often represent or replicate a particular skill, talent, or personality trait. In total, a Mystic will form several abilities throughout their lifetime and can obtain several more inactive powers to no limit. Inactive powers include scrying, divination, alchemy, spell making/casting. Some manifest their powers faster than others but they will not develop all at once. There will always be an ability they are strongest with and one they are not. The current limit is 5 main abilities per Mystic.
Witches and Magi can practice multiple forms of magic so their ability range is wide. They may be born into one type of magic but may decide to branch out towards others. Because of this, they can draw their energy from multiple sources including themselves. Traditional, Elemental, Goetic, Voodooism, Druidry, all these can be practiced by Witches and Magi alike. Warlocks and Sorcerers are limited because they produce their powers from the demon or fae blood in their bodies.
SPELL CASTING - Casting a spell requires an incantation to be spoken in order to achieve the desired effect. Eyesight is needed so that they can see the actual flows of energy being used. Spells can be used for any purpose and can be rewritten for different results. Usually, it is said in a rhyme but this isn't always the case. Some spells require more than one witch for the spell to work, such as summoning a deity or vanquishing a demon. All Mystics can only focus their energy on one spell at a time, no matter how advanced they are.
CASTING CIRCLE - Most beginners who are unable to control their magic practice in what is known as a casting circle. This is the case for all Mystics and its basic elements have not changed since its formation. The circle is etched magically into the ground, preferably hard surfaces, and lined with various symbols that glow when the person enters the center. Within that circle, they can focus their magic better until they can do so on their own. When it comes to increasing spell casting many mystics have been known to use limestone to strengthen their magic. Limestone can contain large amounts of energy, giving them more strength in their spells. Often times Depositories - a place that stores either magical energy, weapons, or knowledge and hidden by magic - are lined with limestone for the energy within it never fades and lasts forever.
ABILITY LOSS - While difficult it is possible for a Mystic to lose their abilities, this can happen in two ways. The first is when a caster draws in too much energy they run the risk of ‘burning out’. Their link to the magic is forever broken. Because using magic is almost addictive, Magi have learned to be vigilant in using their abilities whereas Witches tend to overestimate themselves, though this isn't always the case. The second method of losing their powers is if another group severs it using a spell or potion. This requires the aid of numerous women sharing their powers and at least one male. Individually, however, it is possible to temporarily cut off another magical user from their power by use of a block or shield.
The majority of Mystics are born within a family line of magical blood. The only exception is Warlocks who make a deal with a demon can possess the ability to use magic without being born into it, though they may not be as strong as a Hereditary Mystic. Magic is primarily a hereditary trait passed from mother to daughter, or in the case of males father to son. Any child born from at least one Warlock parent will be born a Warlock. In the case, a female Witch mates with a male human, the daughters will inherit the abilities whereas the sons will not. The same can be said for sons born to a male Magi and female human. If a Magi and Witch were to mate, both children will inherit abilities.
As a child there is nothing much to differentiate them from normal children, however, their magical link is still present and may manifest itself at odd times, from helping them to survive falls that otherwise would kill them to objects randomly bursting into flame. If the child is born to two magical parents the chances of them manifesting their abilities are sooner (typically around 12 as opposed to 18) and have a higher chance of being more powerful in both casting spells and talents.
Firstborn Mystics are believed to be the strongest and have the most potential for great power within a family. Firstborn twins, in rare cases, are considered sacred as not only are there two of them, but they can also feed off each others energy to strengthen their own and are considered their strongest when together.
Mystics are mortal but age slower, the rate of aging is dependent on how often they use their magic and the type. Warlocks can become immortal once they reach adulthood and Sorcerers are inherently immortal from their Fae blood. There have been Witches who have worked alongside Necromancers in order to preserve themselves, using Spirit Migration to transfer their spirit out of their dead/dying body and into a new body. This requires an empty, pure body and a lot of Spirit magic. There is no guarantee if the transfer will be successful as the body could reject the spirit, leaving it lost in the world forever.
Souls also are able to be trapped inside objects such as mirrors. This is so the spirit can be easily reached or communicated with without releasing it first. Water is one way to reach a trapped spirit but it is much harder and the conjurer doesn't have as much control as the spirit is able to travel more freely through water. Free spirits, however, are contacted with water in most cases.
